Susannah Geltman is a Partner in Simpson Thacher’s Litigation Department where she represents clients in a wide range of high-stakes, complex commercial litigation matters including securities, class action, and shareholder derivative litigations, as well as insurance and reinsurance coverage disputes. Her work involves the representation of corporations, financial institutions, private equity firms, insurers and reinsurers, boards of directors, board committees and executives. She has extensive trial and arbitration experience and also advises clients in internal investigations. 

Representative experience includes: 

  • Valeant Pharmaceuticals in federal securities fraud and RICO class actions 
  • Travelers in successful summary judgment motions against lead paint manufacturers seeking coverage for public nuisance claims coverage litigation 
  • Deutsche Bank in a dispute with Accendo Banco, including winning emergency motion for injunctive relief concerning proposed sale of Mexican business 
  • Hain Celestial in connection with an SEC investigation into accounting issues 
  • Board of directors of Fortune 50 company in responding to confidential shareholder demands regarding oil reserve accounting 
  • Sterling Partners in a securities class action arising from its investment in Adeptus Health 
  • SiriusXM and certain directors and officers in shareholder derivative actions, including dismissal on summary judgment of a derivative action related to the Sirius-XM merger 

Susannah has also represented clients on a pro bono basis in a number of areas. Most recently, Susannah co-led the Simpson Thacher team, working together with ACLU and American Immigration Council, that successfully obtained a preliminary injunction blocking the federal government’s new rule that sought to expand fast-track deportations without legal process. Susannah also co-headed the Firm’s trial team, working alongside the National Resources Defense Council, in a long-running litigation involving mercury contamination of the Penobscot River. Susannah serves as the supervising partner in the defense of appeals of final orders of protection obtained by victims of domestic violence, and also recently filed a brief amici curiae on behalf of 15 organizations in connection with the appeal of a family court’s application of the New York Family Court Act in a child neglect case. 

Susannah was recently named a “Rising Star” by the New York Law Journal. She is recognized as a “Next Generation Lawyer” by The Legal 500 and has been honored as a “Rising Star” in Litigation by Euromoney’s Americas Women in Business Law Awards. She was also shortlisted in 2019 by Euromoney’s “Americas Rising Stars” Awards as Best in Litigation: Securities, and is consistently named to Benchmark Litigation’s “40 and Under Hot List.” Susannah is an editor of the Firm’s Securities Law Alert and served on the Law360 Securities Editorial Advisory Board. 

Susannah graduated from Cornell Law School, cum laude, where she served on the Cornell Law Review. She received her B.A., magna cum laude, from Cornell University.
