Oliver’s practice includes corporate & commercial litigation, estate litigation, shareholders’ disputes, professional negligence claims, administrative hearings and class actions. Oliver has extensive experience in franchise disputes, administrative hearings involving post-secondary student academic and non-academic misconduct, and professional discipline. He has appeared before the Provincial Court of Alberta, the Court of Queen’s Bench of Alberta the Alberta Court of Appeal.
In its reported decision, the Court of Appeal specifically referred to Oliver by name saying “I commend Mr. Ho for the speed at which he has prosecuted his assignment. After receiving instructions to bring this application he has prepared an application for permission to intervene, two affidavits, a memorandum of argument and a proposed factum. He has done the impossible.” Oliver has also appeared before the Supreme Court of British Columbia, and various Administrative Boards and Commissions. Oliver also leads JSS Barristers’ Chinese language practice group.
Oliver has authored a number of articles in many areas relating to civil litigation including the Rules of Court, extraordinary remedies, property damage, causation and bankruptcy & insolvency matters, and has been asked to speak and present at numerous events.
Oliver is presently leading a number of class action and mass tort lawsuits at JSS Barristers, including those related to product liability, data breaches and torts resulting in damages caused to tens of thousands of hectares.
Oliver has been a sessional instructor at the University of Calgary teaching business law to undergraduate business students. He previously served four years as a senator of the University of Calgary and was a member of the selection committee for the first Dean of the University of Calgary’s Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. He has also been a regular interviewer, facilitating the admissions process for the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Calgary and continues to sit on the Faculty of Law admission committee. Oliver is also on the board of directors for the Legal Archives Society of Alberta and is an advisor on the advocacy and policy committee of the Federation of Asian Canadian Lawyers.
Oliver was conferred both a B.A. and LL.B. in 2002 from the University of Calgary after having completed his law degree concurrently with his undergraduate degree at the age of 21. In 2016, Oliver earned an MBA from the Haskayne School of Business at the University of Calgary publishing a thesis on Canadian law firm mergers.
Oliver commenced his articles with Gowlings in 2002. In November of 2004 Oliver joined JSS Barristers, where he continues his practice and is presently a partner.
