Katy M. Young is a founder and the Managing Partner of Ad Astra Law Group, LLP. After years of litigation in more traditional industries, she turned her sights on the cannabis industry. Her areas of practice applicable to the cannabis industry are business, real estate, and intellectual property litigation, including partnership disputes, breach of contract, investor issues, business torts, landlord/tenant and real property purchase matters, and general counsel work. Many of her cases are ones of first impression, helping shape what has become a multi-billion dollar industry.
Ms. Young is the President of the Board of Directors of the InterNational Cannabis Bar Association. She is also active in the Edward J. McFetridge American Inn of Court and the Berkeley Rotary Club. She is a member of ProVisors’ San Francisco IX, ProVisors’ Bay Area Lawyers’ Affinity Group, and ProVisors’ Cannabis Affinity Group (as well as the Executive Committees of each of those groups). She served for three years on the Executive Committee of the Litigation Section of the Bar Association of San Francisco. She has been named a Super Lawyer Rising Star from 2014 through 2021 and honored as part of Benchmark Litigation’s Top 40 Under 40 Hotlist from 2018 through 2021. She is a super-volunteer and passionate about giving all that she can to her community.
Her notable cases include claims for and against industry giants like Harvest, Flow Kana, GKUA, and High Times. She successfully defended a County Supervisor in a $25m unfair competition claim stemming from the Supervisor’s participation in the cannabis industry as a private business owner. Her clients are found all over California and span the supply chain from cultivation to retail, as well as ancillary businesses.
A lifelong athlete and learner, she went to college on a water polo scholarship and graduated cum laude from University of the Pacific. She then pursued a paralegal certificate and worked in law firms before even applying to law school. Ms. Young graduated from University of San Francisco School of Law, magna cum laude, in 2009. She was a member of the law review and the moot court program as well as a tutor and mentor. Ms. Young spent her last semester of law school working as a judicial extern for Chief Magistrate Judge James Larson in the Northern District of California. She also spent a summer working for the California State Bar Office of the Chief Trial Counsel which prosecutes attorneys charged with ethical violations. Ms. Young is a tenaciously tireless advocate for her clients and the cannabis industry that she is helping to shape through her litigation work.
