Julie A. North is a partner in Cravath’s Litigation Department. Her broad litigation practice encompasses general commercial, securities, and mergers and acquisitions litigation, among other areas. Ms. North advises clients on antitrust regulatory clearance issues in connection with mergers and acquisitions. She also has experience in advising and defending clients in matters involving the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act.
Ms. North is currently representing Novartis Pharmaceuticals in antitrust litigation alleging an unlawful agreement with another drug manufacturer to delay generic competition for the drug Exforge®. Ms. North’s past regulatory clearance matters include Delhaize Group’s $29 billion merger of equals with Royal Ahold N.V.; Weyerhaeuser Company’s $23 billion merger with PlumCreek Timber Company; and MarkWest Energy Partners’ $21 billion merger with MPLX LP.
In addition, Ms. North recently represented PG&E as lead trial counsel in hundreds of claims filed against the company arising out of the 2017 and 2018 California wildfires. She also represented Time Warner in an antitrust lawsuit brought by the DOJ seeking to block the company’s $109 billion sale to AT&T—the government’s first challenge to a vertical merger in decades—securing a victory in June 2018 following a six week trial.
Ms. North’s extensive pro bono efforts have focused on working with the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and other national organizations to reform the manner in which states provide legal services to indigent citizens. She currently represents a group of foster care children in New York City as plaintiffs in a class action lawsuit alleging systemic deficiencies in the New York City foster care system.
In 2019, Ms. North was included in Crain’s New York Business’s list of “Notable Women in Law.” She has been named a “National Star” in antitrust and securities litigation by Benchmark Litigation and has been named to Benchmark’s Top 250 Women in Litigation every year since its inception.
Ms. North received a B.A. cum laude from Hamilton College in 1984 and a J.D. magna cum laude from Syracuse University College of Law in 1989. Ms. North joined Cravath in 1989 and was elected a partner in 1996.
