As head of the Insurance Recovery Group at Hoguet Newman Regal & Kenney—the women-owned litigation boutique she co-founded 25 years ago—Dorothea Regal has obtained hundreds of millions of dollars for corporate policyholders from insurers. She has extensive litigation and arbitration experience, in the U.S. and internationally. She is frequently sought out by corporate policyholders to advise and represent them in complex and valuable insurance coverage disputes. In the courtroom, Dorothea has contributed to cutting-edge legal developments in insurance law, prevailing for commercial and industrial policyholders in connection with insurance coverage for environmental, asbestos, products and directors & officers liability claims, property insurance, and business interruption coverage. As just one example, she and her team won a groundbreaking ruling for Syngenta in a $170 million insurance coverage dispute over product liability claims involving the company’s herbicide.
Currently, she represents: a global company in a Swiss arbitration to enforce a claim for insurance coverage for ongoing toxic tort litigation against the company in the U.S. and Canada and also represents the company in a coverage litigation in Delaware against over a hundred of legacy insurers that issued policies to its predecessors; a global company in another Swiss arbitration to enforce a claim for insurance coverage for defense costs and settlement liability in excess of $700 million in connection with nationwide U.S. litigation claims of U.S. corn farmers for economic damage due to China’s rejection of certain GMO corn shipments; a leading U.S. company in an ongoing multimillion-dollar insurance coverage dispute against an insurer related to hundreds of asbestos premises claims; and a foreign bank conducting business in the U.S. in its insurance claim for defense costs and liability in connection with a $12 million claim of alleged employment discrimination. She also has successfully handled many business litigations involving contract disputes, employment issues, and general corporate matters. In addition, she has successfully handled letter of credit cases and counseled clients in this highly specialized area, representing banks, including on bank-to-bank issues, or their customers or beneficiaries.
This year, Dorothea was named a Distinguished Leader by The New York Law Journal, a Notable Women Business Owner by Crain’s, and was shortlisted for Euromoney’s Women in Business Law Americas awards. She has been named a Local Litigation Star by Benchmark Litigation since 2018, an Elite Boutique Trailblazer by The National Law Journal, and a New York Metro Super Lawyer for Insurance Coverage since 2014.
Dorothea is a Fellow of the American College of Coverage Counsel, the preeminent association representing the interests of policyholders and insurers in disputes arising out of insurance policies. She currently serves as the policyholder-side co-chair of the Business Interruption Insurance Subcommittee of the ABA’s Insurance Coverage Litigation Committee. She is also active in the Women’s Leadership Circle of Brooklyn Law School, a program launched in 2017 aimed at advancing women lawyers in their careers, as well as the ABA’s Women in Insurance Network. She was a corporate and litigation associate at White & Case from 1978 through 1995.
