Dispute resolution

The Beijing office of Dentons, known as Dacheng (大成), is widely recognised for its work in commercial disputes, particularly in the banking and finance space. The firm’s industry strength lies in financial services, technology and communications, energy, aviation and life sciences. In Hong Kong, the firm is active in the international arbitration space. As a result of active involvement in the BRI initiative, the firm handles an increasing number of disputes arising out of BRI projects and investments.

Huazhi Yuan and Zhibin Zheng are noted for their work in construction and insolvency disputes. In the Hong Kong office, key figures include Richard Keady and Allan Leung who specialises in commercial disputes and international arbitration.

Case highlights include representing a PRC state-owned enterprise and two of its general directors in defending High Court proceedings brought by a former chairman of a Hong Kong-listed company; acting for The National Trust in its application for an urgent domestic and worldwide Mareva injunction against its debtor and obligors; and acting for the joint liquidators of Ocean Sino and PBM Asset Management in pursuit of legal actions against BGA Holdings and its directors and other shareholders for recovery of valuable assets.

In international arbitration, the firm is acting for Southwest Pacific Bauxite (HK) in an HKIAC arbitration regarding a shareholder dispute. The decision was important as it established for the first time in Hong Kong that a company could not be wound up based on a debt arising out of a contract containing an arbitration clause.

Key clients include Abercrombie & Fitch, Akbank, Cheung Kei Center and Hong Kong Solicitors Indemnity Fund.

The firm has launched an interactive web-based tool that allows clients to obtain injunctive relief, temporary respite and control of a situation in case of urgent legal emergencies across multiple jurisdictions.
